Seen in someone's sig block on Autocat:

There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there always has been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that "my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge."

Woo, [personal profile] enotsola and I are going to see a local company's production of Spamalot on April 30th! Way cheaper than when it was playing in San Francisco a while back, IIRC. I picked a Sunday matinee, so there shall likely be Brunch beforehand, with Mimosas, and it will all be Very Cultured, because Monty Python is so High Class.*

As you may have noticed if you're reading this on LJ, I've turned off commenting on the crossposts. I am waffling over whether to stop crossposting entirely (except for the occasional PSA). However, for the moment I am not in a rush to entirely delete my journal, because it occurred to me that 1. that breaks memories links and it always annoys me when that happens, and 2. I don't want to orphan the community I own (though I have backed it up to DW) without discussing the community's future with its members, and that needs to get handled.

As I see people and communities make their own announcements about moving to Dreamwidth, I am gradually removing them from my reading filter on LJ and adding them on DW (not unfriending, just tweaking of reading lists).

Today I had to click Previous 50 when I read my DW flist on one account.

And by the time I did, the last post from the first page was again at the top of the next one back, meaning one new post had been made in that time.

Wow.

I mean, it's probably [community profile] 2017revival, but I haven't had to do that in a long time on LJ, never mind DW (like, ever).

Directory post linking LJ usernames with DW usernames - small at the moment, but might help you find someone or someone to find you, if you add yourself.

Count me among those very troubled by LJ's new user agreement. It's not surprising that it happened, but... yeah. I was not thrilled with the situation since January but now I'm feeling a rather stronger urge to up stakes entirely. At the very least, in the short term I am seriously considering stopping crossposting or at least turning off commenting.

I'm not sure what to do about the LJ community I own, though. I'm sure there are tools to just export it to a static file, but what I would really like is to import it to the DW community of the same name. I don't own that community, though, and despite poking [personal profile] elven_ranger about it a few times the agreed-upon transfer just has never happened. So I'm torn over maybe creating a new DW community just for a landing place, or what.

In other news, since Verizon and Yahoo closed their deal, I'm now also more acutely concerned about how to back up archives of Yahoo groups. I can't imagine that service is long for this world.

The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien, from a letter to his son Michael Tolkien ca. October 1968:
The 'protestant' search backwards for 'simplicity' and directness -- which, of course, though it contains some good or at least intelligible motives, is mistaken and indeed vain. Because 'primitive Christianity' is now and in spite of all 'research' will ever remain largely unknown; because 'primitiveness' is no guarantee of value, and is and was in great part a reflection of ignorance. ... Still more because 'my church' was not intended by Our Lord to be static or remain in perpetual childhood; but to be a living organism (likened to a plant), which develops and changes in externals by the interaction of its bequeathed divine life and history -- the particular circumstances of the world into which it is set. There is no resemblance between the 'mustard-seed' and the full-grown tree. For those living in the days of its branching growth the Tree is the thing, for the history of a living thing is part of its life, and the history of a divine thing is sacred. The wise may know that it began with a seed, but it is vain to try and dig it up, for it no longer exists, and the virtue and powers that it had now reside in the Tree. Very good: but in husbandry the authorities, the keepers of the Tree, must look after it, according to such wisdom as they possess, prune it, remove cankers, rid it of parasites, and so forth. ... But they will certainly do harm, if they are obsessed with the desire of going back to the seed or even to the first youth of the plant when it was (as they imagine) pretty and unafflicted by evils.

The professor is speaking here of Roman Catholicism, but it's an interesting reflection on religion in general and I think it could be quite applicable to Paganism.

Has anyone out there used the IRS's Direct Pay online bank transfer payment thingy when mailing a tax return (not filing electronically)? The 1040 instructions don't say you can't mix these methods (in fact seem to be encouraging me to do so in lieu of a paper check) but I can't figure out what would be the right order to do things in.

If I make the payment the same day, say, without first waiting for the return forms to be delivered in San Francisco, then they get this weird payment in advance and I'm not sure how it would be properly linked with the paper after the fact. But if I try to schedule the payment so that it falls after when I guess the return will arrive in San Francisco, then I've sent in a 1040 stating I owe but which doesn't include any payment (and I don't see, like, a box to check stating my intent to pay online).

Can anyone advise which way around I ought to go?
