It kind of annoys me that Darth Vader's name authority record (which, despite being a fictional character, he has instead of a subject authority because of reasons) treats "Darth" as a forename and not as a title. 100 1_ ǂa Vader, Darth ǂc (Fictitious character). Compare, for example, 100 0_ ǂa Elizabeth ǂb I, ǂc Queen of England, ǂd 1533-1603. Subfield c here is "Titles and other words associated with a name", and besides use for noble or religious titles, often gets used for disambiguating characteristics when the preferred method of birth and/or death dates is not available. (Although I do not in fact see any other Darth Vader to diambiguate from -- though there is a "D. Vader" -- some people are adding "Fictitious character" even when not required so that it's immediately obvious, especially if this person were to be attributed as the author of a work.) But. Like. I kinda want 100 0_ ǂa Vader, ǂc Darth. The see-from reference 400 1_ Skywalker, Anakin ǂc (Fictitious character) can stay, of course. (I think you probably can't combine both those phrases in a single ǂc, though.)

[personal profile] rachelmanija:
Are you worried about nuclear war? I am too. Keep reading for a way to stop it with one simple action.

Maybe you feel small and powerless. But many snowflakes make an avalanche. If we all move in the same direction, we'll be unstoppable. We will only fail if we choose not to act.

Trump has the power to order a pre-emptive nuclear strike for any reason - or no reason at all. He's always shadowed by a man with a briefcase of codes, called the "nuclear football," to enable him to launch nuclear missiles at any time. It would take less than five minutes from his order to the missiles being launched, and no one could stop him. Republican Senator Bob Corker says Trump is leading us into World War III. I believe him.

But we don't have to stand by and let it happen. Let's pull away that football!

Both House and Senate have bills to prevent the President from launching a pre-emptive nuclear strike without a congressional declaration of war. They're both called the Restricting First Use of Nuclear Weapons Act of 2017. (S. 200 - Senate, HR 669 - House.) Passing those bills may literally save the world.

Seems like Proposition 64 is not going to have a lot of practical effect, since every local jurisdiction is just going ahead and banning sale and growing of marijuana anyway:

http://www.mercurynews.com/2017/10/05/cities-in-santa-clara-county-scramble-to-ban-marijuana-sales-ahead-of-jan-1/
http://www.mercurynews.com/2017/10/06/sunnyvale-votes-to-ban-recreational-marijuana-dispensaries-and-outdoor-cultivation/

And some of these are including some things related to medical marijuana as well, like delivery services, which has got to suck.

Green Eggs and Silmarils by Zdenka

Technically this is fanfic, but I think more people on this flist are likely to get a kick out of it than if I post about it on [personal profile] shyfoxling. Unfortunately it's not very long (only 430 words) so is a rather brief joke on the subject.

Fëanor. I’m Fëanor.
More skilled than any Elf before.
These are my sons: one, two, three, four,
five, six, and seven – maybe more!
...
I made these gems: one, two, and three.
They are the best. Don’t you agree?

New redwood park in Santa Cruz Mountains could come from Beall law

Clearing the way for what could potentially be the biggest open space deal in the Santa Cruz Mountains in years, Gov. Jerry Brown on Thursday signed a bill that would streamline the sale of up to 6,500 acres of land owned by San Jose Water Company and to become a public open space preserve.

The bill would allow the sale of the land — which includes 1,100 acres of redwood forests and could easily eclipse $30 million in price — to the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District without approval from the state Public Utilities Commission. The commission regulates San Jose Water, and its processes are often bureaucratic and slow-moving.

Talks are still in the very early stages.

I'm wouldn't call this a "new redwood park" as it sounds like they want to add the land to Sierra Azul Open Space Preserve, and most of the parcels form an irregular shape along the edge of that park, but I suppose you could call it "new redwood park-land".

I can't go to this, but perhaps some on my flist will be interested.

Currently listening to a random Cure playlist. Somehow that track brings back memories of Sac'to goth clubs 1999-2000 even tho I don't think they played Pornography, or not that much anyway?. More like it makes me remember what I played at home, which would probably involve Pornography and Faith and Disintegration and such. But now I think of it, what really makes me think of that time is Peter Murphy, either "I'll Fall With Your Knife" or "Mercy Rain".

I actually just cut a circle out of last night's polenta to have it for breakfast with a little goat cheese and a fried egg on top.

Someone take Food Network away from me.

Books free to good home

My library has discarded its set of The Golden Bough by James Frazer. Unfortunately this is not a complete set and is missing the first two volumes (which I guess must have been an introductory volume and then Part I, since "volume 3" is labeled Part II). Don't believe the year in the call number; this edition is New York: St. Martin's Press, 1963 (some volumes say 1966).

(click to embiggen)

I didn't take a picture of the inside of any of these, but the paper seems in decent condition, somewhat yellowed but not like the one below. Free of internal markings as far as I can see.

There is also this extremely condensed illustrated volume which seems to contain just a few selected chapters from the first two to four or so parts (Taboo and the Perils of the Soul, The Dying God) and some from the later Balder volumes (part VII). New York: Avenel Books, 1981; 407 pp; ISBN 0517336332. Considerably age-yellowed, as you can see in the second picture. The jacket art also seems fairly faded on the spine.

(click to embiggen)

All have library processing: besides the labels you can easily see in the photos, there are call numbers written in pencil on endpapers or title page; plastic jacket covers that have been taped on (although I don't guarantee the tape is still holding on every corner); stamps on edges of pages; glued-in checkout card pockets or the remains thereof; and barcode stickers.

Free to anyone who wants them - pay shipping.
