FHDA employees like myself get three kinds of vacation-like leave: vacation itself, compensatory time, and personal leave.

Vacation is earned at a certain number of hours per month. I earn 6.66 hours a month, which is 2 weeks per year. The rate increases with seniority, which can lead to some interesting problems when you bump up against the vacation cap (see this post*). As for myself, though, I constantly seem to be running on empty with vacation time, what with all the random trips to Canada and having to bookend an extra day for travel time if I want to go to a 'kin gather.

Compensatory time is an overtime scheme; rather than pay us time and a half in dollars (since we all have set salaries), we get time and a half in leave hours. However, this costs the District (and by extension the Library) more to pay me, so my administrator declared a moratorium on all overtime without his direct permission. My balance of .36 hours, which it's been sitting at for a while now, is not usable, and there's no way to get more.

Personal leave is a funny beast. We get 40 hours per year, but it does not accumulate. Every July we start over at 40 hours. I always envision its purpose as being for those times when you need time off for "other obligations", stuff that isn't vacation, but also isn't sick/medical leave or any of the other things we're allowed to take time off for (bereavement, jury duty...). Therefore, I tend to forget it's there, and I find myself with three weeks left in the fiscal year, and 28 hours of the stuff waiting to be used.

Noticing this, my supervisor (as distinct from my administrator) suggested that I take some days off during the rest of this month, rather than simply lose it when the clock ticks back over to 40 on the first of July. Whole days didn't work out too well given the scheduling of everything else, but it looks like I may be taking between two and five half days, mostly next week. That means coming in to work at 4:00 in the afternoon on those days.

w00t.

* - The situation turned out to not be as dire as I was worrying it might be. She's not doing the half days on all days, just some of them. The problem of lunch was resolved by my supervisor insisting that the third one of us working down here, while not the same circulatory job title as the other two of us and therefore not considerable as real "coverage", nevertheless be physically present during the time when I need to have lunch, because if nothing else, he can open the cash drawer, which is the most frequent thing for which the supervisor is needed.
