Gosh, apparently Jerry Brown won the Dem primary for Governor. Wonder how that happened. I don't know whether it's good or bad that Meg Whitman won the Republican one. Steve Poizner scares me too but I'm not sure which of them would be more likely to lose against Jerry Brown (not that I know if I particularly want him, but I don't want either of the other two). Gavin Newsom for the Dem Lieutenant Gov primary, no surprise there. Man. Jerry Brown and Gavin Newsom. Is there a more characteristically Californian ticket possible right now?
Ugh, Prop 14 is apparently passed. I really don't like the idea that in future elections I might be forced to choose between, say, two Republican candidates or abstain (as this or two Dems seems the most likely kind of outcome - I suppose in that sense it's just as unfair to the Republicans), or that I might vote for a Republican or Libertarian or whatever without knowing it. (I have, in the past, sometimes done so knowingly; I hate that this information could be concealed from me.) And I don't like that in the general election it forces a choice between two, and not more (if I understood the proposition correctly); the minor parties are unlikely to make it through the "top two vote-getters" gate and make it very hard for me to, say, vote Green if I wish to.
edit 6/10/10: Funny thing. My mother is a FOX/Rush Limbaugh kind of Republican, but she apparently hates Meg Whitman with a passion. Husband thinks she would almost have been ready to vote for Jerry Brown (!) in November -- except that she hates Gavin Newsom even more, for some reason. This is a false dilemma, though; Governor and Lieutenant Governor are separately elected, not bound together like President and Vice President as running mates, so she could vote for Brown and then vote for Abel Maldonado (the Republican candidate and incumbent) if she likes. And not that the Lieutenant Governor actually does anything, but maybe she fears him getting experience and recognition (! Gavin Newsom needs more recognition in California?) and running for Governor himself someday, which wouldn't be implausible.
