I never got the idea A Midsummer Night's Dream was supposed to take place on May Eve? If anything I'd have thought St John's Day, June 24? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midsummer_Day#United_Kingdom. Beltane is the beginning of summer (in the Irish two-pole system), not the middle. If anything's the middle in that conception it'd be Lughnasadh, but AFAIK it wasn't thought of as such.

I was quoting someone else. See my comment to dancinglights below; I was just making a note of this because the idea of thinking about in terms of how many "pushes that drive the wheel" I feel may be a useful approach. I'm pretty sure I feel more than these two.
