...really, University of Texas? You're going with this for your job announcement on Autocat? Really?

Also, I know life is cheaper in Texas, but I'm appalled at the salary they're offering for a university position requiring a master's degree, and a department manager at that (not "just" a librarian). The current starting salary for my own position (which is at a community college and requires only an associate's degree, so far as I know) is more than they're offering!

Wait, “salt of the earth people”? Which UTexas location is this (if it's safe to say)? I'm not sure that'd be the best description of the flagship one in Austin, at least… well, maybe.

Ahhh. Odessa. Yeesh. Never been there myself, but that'd explain pretty much all of it. I forgot UTexas even had a location there. It's definitely more an industrial town overall, from what I hear.

Odessa is Other People is Hell. Texans avoid Odessa. Nothing to do but drink, watch local football, and -- I dunno -- play with oil spills?

Admittedly, I'm pretty sure the cost of living would be minuscule in comparison, but so would the cultural capital available...

I'm sure the cost of living there is far cheaper than it is here, but I find it really doubtful that it's that much cheaper.

$44k they were offering. The current salary scale for my position comes out to about $46k at the bottom step. Granted, as I said to premchaia_pre4, it was apparently in East Jesus Nowhere, but still *shakes head*
