Mmkay. Judy (my boss before last) just called a little while ago saying that the guy who had moved into my old position in the Open Media Lab when I left to go to Technical Services at the time there was some shuffling of personnel due to layoffs (ca. March 2005)has moved back into his old job at EOPS, and they thus need to hire a temporary person for the evenings in the Lab and that there will be a permanent hiring soon thereafter. In other words, this is an opportunity for me to get almost exactly my old job back. The union contract is not specific about what might happen to my salary (there are provisions to start someone above base level, but they refer only to "new employees" and not "re-employed" persons like myself), but in the event of such "re-employment" within the same calendar year I get my old seniority back (read: vacation hours per year, place in the "bumping rights" in terms of layoffs, etc.), and of course the benefits package is extremely plush.

The Media Lab was a place I was desperate to escape after 4 years, but within another 4 years there may be another opportunity, who knows (Tracy or Carole may go somewhere else, or something might open at Foothill). Apparently the outgoing Dean (under whom I worked, but who is retiring on Jan 2) insisted that Judy make sure to call me about this, not that she wasn't going to anyway. BTW Judy herself has applied for the position of Interim Dean which would be for the six months January to July while they search for a permanent Dean, so she would have some influence over whether I get placed at some higher salary (placement at step 2 is explicitly up to HR/supervising manager, who would be her; higher than that goes to Chancellor/Superintendent, but I imagine the case is submitted by one's supervisor/HR).

So, yeah. I think I still would take the Sunnyvale Public job if it were offered, but aside from that, this is the best news I've had a month. I have no doubt they'd hire me if I applied - after all, I was doing that exact job just a couple years ago and would only need a brief update on any interim policy changes to be right back in the swim. It's hard to compete with "I wrote the book on this job".

Slightly creepy/interesting/encouraging: this followed on my thought earlier today that there should be an elegant way for me to get back in at De Anza without anyone else having to suffer, and a brief magical working to the effect that either the old Acq. position or the Sunnyvale Public one would be mine.
