This entry is probably not of any interest to anyone, it's just me (*gasp*!) journaling my thoughts on this because it helps to organize things in my head.

The library hours are shortening next quarter from 7:30 am - 9:00 pm M-Th, 7:30-4:00 F, and 9:00-4:30 Sat to 8:00 am - 8:00 pm M-Th, 8:00 am - 4:00 pm F, and closed Sat.

Saturdays ain't got nuthin' to do with nuthin' (except the angry students who couldn't take classes or come in to the Media Lab at any other times), since I haven't worked on Saturdays for a year now.

My work schedule right now is 12:30-9:30 M-Th and 12:30-4:30 F. I had submitted a schedule of 11:30-8:30 M-Th and 12:30-4:30 F for Spring, basically just backing things up one hour on the days we closed earlier. Unfortunately, to do so would mean I would lose my swing shift differential. To keep that differential I have to be here after 9:00 pm, which presents a couple of scheduling options.

One, swallow the pay loss. It's a couple of hundred dollars a month, is all. Still, a couple of hundred bucks is a couple of hundred bucks! Two, remain on the same schedule. Three, change to a "four-ten" format, where I work 11:30-9:30 M-Th and not at all on Fridays.

One is not an option I want to take, really. Two offers the benefit of being able to stay with a schedule I am used to, and not having to get up any earlier in the morning.

Three offers a four-day work-week, even if the days themselves are longer. Ten hours is my threshold of "a long day", but I'd probably deal. This also offers the interesting benefit of using up less vacation time if I take a Thursday-Friday-Monday off (my usual for things like Kinvention North and Walking the Thresholds), since I would only have to count 20 hours for Thur/Mon and not 22 for Thur/Fri/Mon (or 24 like the poor saps who work 8 hours on Fridays ^_^).

On the other hand, it means some odd things about paid holidays, and forces me to use up vacation time in other ways. All paid holidays are 8 hours, and 8 hours only. Therefore if one falls on a day that I state I am going to work 10 hours, I have to make up for those other two hours by using up leave. This doesn't make me happy but it seems to be related to the legalities of payroll. Additionally, holidays which fall on a Friday would have to be made up some other way as well, this time in the positive by taking some other day off without using vacation time. That sounds fine but tends to make things a bit hard on the other employees, as I have to be filled in for.

Also, two and three both present the question: how can I justify being here until 9:30 when we close at 8:00? What am I going to do in that hour and a half? Sure, Atousa (the other person in my situation, who works evenings at Circulation) has stuff to do "after hours", reserves processing and whatnot, but I'm not sure I could occupy myself with things that are actually work (even slow, lazy work) for an hour and a half every day after closing.
