Last night I caught about the last 15 minutes of an episode of Lexx because my VCR happened to be set to the Sci-Fi Channel after the tape of MST3K I had been watching was over. When I've watched Lexx before I was never all that impressed by it, but then I've never gotten into Farscape or Stargate: SG-1 either. But this episode - "Brigadoom" - was truly bizarre. It appeared at first that Kai and Xev were in some kind of musical play that chronicled some of the history of the Brunnen-G, and, well... just look at this page, okay? It was just such the coolest thing.

Some nights ago the same thing happened, although earlier (I think about 12:30 am), and on this occasion the VCR had been tuned to UPN, so I was dropped into Voyager. Again, not something I've been historically impressed with; I watched Voyager for a while when it first started, but quickly grew bored of it. (I still don't think DS9, Voyager, or Enterprise have lived up to TNG at all, but that's here nor there.) But this episode kicked ass - which was fairly amusing, considering that it wasn't really a story about Voyager at all, but in fact about Lieutenant Reginald Barclay, working at Starfleet Command on Earth, trying to work out a way to contact them, along the way spending lots of time in his various holodeck simulations that he relates to so much better than actual people.

I found the character rather irritating in the TNG episode in season 2 or 3 or 4 or whatever where he had "holodiction" and re-created his fellow crew members on the holodeck. But in this episode of Voyager, seeing him go back and forth between deep social nervousness in "real life" and being one smooth cat on the holodeck was vastly entertaining (I quite admire the actor's skill). In fact it was so well-written and well-done that at one point I actually pounded my fist on the bed in frustrated suspense - "No, you can't commercial break now, you bastards! Get on with the story!"
