Teacher punishes student for telling another student his mother is gay and explaining what "gay" means

Also, I know the child is only 7, and therefore in the first or second grade, but I had way better spelling than that when I was 7 (granted I was in the third grade then, i.e., more reading and writing experience). "Recess" could be a hard word, and the "t" on the end of "kept" might be something needed to be learned by rote depending on how people pronounce it in that neck of the woods (my dad says things like "kep", "swep", etc for words that end in "pt"), but he should at least be able to spell "said" and "words", I think. I wonder if his teacher is working with him on that rather than paying attention to what a "bad word" "gay" is.
