"R2-D2['s player]: No problem. I have Mechanic at max. I roll 01101.
GM: What?
R2-D2: Custom dice.
GM: Are they really labelled in binary? Let me see.
R2-D2: Of course. I got this set especially for playing robot characters.
GM: Are they chrome??
R2-D2: Titanium.
Oh yeah. You can tell the hard core gamers by the dice they have.
As the tools of the trade of roleplaying, dice assume a mystical, hallowed position in the minds of all true gamers, somewhat similar to the symbolism of the square and compasses of the Freemasons. If ever gamers formed a secretive globe-spanning society bent on infiltrating the halls of power and subtly influencing the course of world events*, you just know what their symbol would be.
* Fortunately for everyone else, gamers could never be this organised."
It's so true. My mother gave me a set of lead crystal d6es once, just as a novelty, and I had her make a special velvet rolling cloth for me so I could actually use them in gaming (we played mostly CoC at that time; lots off ) without damaging them. I also have a set of brass d6es which are segments of hexagonal prism, so they are columnar rather than cubical, but I don't use them for any special purpose, they are just neat. The crystal ones I used to treat as lucky. I suppose they were not perfectly fair, because the pips were raised crystals adhered to the cube, and not flat dots or carefully measured depressions sunk in the surface, but hey.
I mistyped the tag on this post as "gookitude". Um, that would be something else entirely. Not to mention not a word I would actually use.
