How on earth do we learn to gargle?

It's such a weird set of muscle motions and comes so close to drowning. "Let that liquid just far enough down the air pipe that you can blow bubbles through it! No, really! It'll be fine!"

For that matter, when? I have no recollection, which says to me that it's way down/up on the list of instinctual behaviours.

I think it might have developed as a saving mechanism. You know, like if you swallow water by accident and while trying to prevent it from blocking the pipe, you gurgle?

*shrug* trial and error? You might see a grown-up do it and feel curious and try. Ahaha and yeah that's slightly paradoxical. A circle has no beginning.

i think it might come from the same sort of area that singing comes from. there's a thought, circular breathing and gargling. or better yet, overtone singing and gargling.

Um, like riding a bike? Common sense would inform us that upon exiting the womb, the first (essential!) thing to be done is evacuate accumulated amniotic fluid from the lungs. Then, as years pass, we learn to blow bubbles into our milk through a straw, making a horrific mess for our maternal unit to deal with, and amusing the family canine unit. Maybe it's just part of the 'fun' gene. That one wearing the clown suit on chromsome 38, fifth from the right.
