An alternative approach is you can go back right after you add the bookmark, right click on it, and select "properties". That brings up both the label and the description field, both editable.
I'm not sure, but I think Firefox 3 does this. I noticed that the bookmark interface is enhanced, and that may be one of the enhancements. I didn't pay much attention, because basic bookmarking is sufficient for my needs. I have FF3 at work, and will verify tomorrow. If you don't keep up on this, FF3 is currently on beta 5, which is the last beta. It should be coming out for real in the next month or two, I believe.
You call it "enhanced", I call it a travesty. I hate the way the bookmark window looks in Fx 3 betas. I only hope someone will make extensions that patch it back to the way it is currently, and/or that the person who makes Flat Bookmark Editing will update it to work with version 3.

This is in Windows XP. YMMV.
