The idea is to go here: http://longboredsurfer.com/charts.php, and for every year you were in high school, pick your favorite then and now, and also the worst one.

Whoops, I mised out worst. Ah well; this is already kinda too long.

1991

I don't even recognize two thirds of this.

Favourite then:
Probably 11. Motownphilly » Boyz II Men. In junior high my friends and I were into that sort of stuff (Color Me Badd, C+C Music Factory...) and I hadn't grown out of it yet. (Not that pop-R&B is inherently evil, just that my tastes changed.)

Favourite now:
33. Losing My Religion » R.E.M.

P.S.:
20. Good Vibrations » Marky Mark & The Funky Bunch Featuring Loleatta Holloway
Please tell me this wasn't a Beach Boys cover. I may have to nip off and shoot myself.

1992

Favourite then:
08. Under The Bridge » Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Favourite now:
Oh man. Don't make me pick between
39. Bohemian Rhapsody » Queen
55. I Can't Dance » Genesis
71. Friday I'm In Love » Cure.

P.S.
01. End Of The Road » Boyz II Men
Was SO FUCKING OVERPLAYED on radio.

17. November Rain » Guns N' Roses
Was SO FUCKING OVERPLAYED on MTV. But I still like it. And the video, actually, now that I don't see it ten times a day.

68. No Son Of Nine » Genesis
That's "No Son of Mine".

This year also contains a lot of what would now be guilty, goofy, nostalgic pleasures:

02. Baby Got Back » Sir Mix A-lot
Richard Cheese FTW.

03. Jump » Kris Kross

13. I'm Too Sexy » Right Said Fred
With all affection, a hearty fuck you, Neil Cicierega, for putting this in a new context that now will NEVER LEAVE MY BRAIN.

24. Jump Around » House Of Pain
I'm the cream of the crop, I rise to the top!

46. 2 Legit 2 Quit » Hammer

72. Everything About You » Ugly Kid Joe

76. Addams Groove » Hammer
XD Do what they want to do! Say what they want to say! Live how they want to live! Play how they want to play!

1993

I don't recognize, like, 80% of this. By this point I had been turned on to Monty Python, Dr. Demento, They Might be Giants, and the Moody Blues, you see.

Favourite then:
28. Two Princes » Spin Doctors.

Favourite now:
27. I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) » Proclaimers
95. Hey Jealousy » Gin Blossoms.

P.S.
01. I Will Always Love You » Whitney Houston
*vomit*

35. If I Had No Loot » Tony! Toni! Tone!
O.O I'd forgotten this band existed. (Three girls, right? And shouldn't that be Toné?)

65. Insane In The Brain » Cypress Hill
Insane in the membrane...

93. Three Little Pigs » Green Jelly
XD LITTLE PIG LITTLE PIG LET ME IN!

94. Livin' On The Edge » Aerosmith
Was it? I'm really only familiar with "Livin' in the Fridge", you see.

1994

Almost complete cluelessness.

Favourite then:
...Guess I didn't like any of them then.

Favourite now:
51. Found Out About You » Gin Blossoms. But that's a fairly weak choice, and I only know it because it was on "New Miserable Experience", which I used to own.

P.S.:
19. The Most Beautiful Girl In The World » Prince Symbol
What? They didn't use a little graphic? Or at least call him "The Artist"? (I have never heard of this song, by the way.)

42. Whoomp! (There It Is) » Tag Team
Not to be confused with "Whoot! There It Is", by 95 South, which was on the previous year's list.

65. Tootsee Roll » 69 Boyz
I only recognize this at all from its inclusion in Ishkur's Guide to Electronic Music.

1995

Favourite then:
93. Cotton Eye Joe » Rednex.

Favourite now:
99. Misery » Soul Asylum.

P.S.:
01. Gangsta's Paradise » Coolio
O.O really? But again, I'm only truly familiar with "Amish Paradise".

02. Waterfalls » TLC
Ditto, in this case "Phony Calls".

So there you have it. Note the trend of continual decrease in the currency of my knowlege about pop music. It didn't stop there, which is why I just don't get most of Weird Al's last two albums.

Ah the early nineties... They were such a musical grab-bag weren't they? I was really into grunge rock then. But I have always been a sucker for cheesy dance pop.

You mentioned Monty Python and thinking about that in context with high school reminded me of something silly. My history teacher would wear flannel shirts, jeans and those yellow work boots on Fridays and my friend Jennifer and I would sing "I'm a lumberjack and I'm okay. I sleep all night and I work all day." And so on until it drove him nuts. I was so naughty. *g*

Put down the weapons - "Good Vibrations" by Mark Wahlberg & his Bunch of Funkiness is not a cover of the Beach Boys, merely a song with the same name. Later, he got defunked and went into acting.

Tony! Toni! Tone! is indeed a band of three girls, except that it's actually three guys. 8-]

"Tootsie Roll" - I'd neer heard of until a few years ago when I bought the ESPN Jock Jam, which used about 15 seconds of it.

I've almost reached the point where I like his original songs more than the parodies (which isn't to say I don't still dig the parodies - I just don't dig the source material that much).

I'd say more, but it's Weasel Stomping Day. puts on helmet
