Is there a way to change the real order of accounts in Thunderbird, and thus change the order in which they are checked for new mail?

I read this thread in the KB and I tried this extension (which I guess just does the prefs.js editing for you?), but while the display order was changed in Tools > Account Settings (the only place I see such a change, because I feed all accounts into Local Folders), they appeared to be getting checked in the same sequence as always. (I want Gmail to be checked first, or I guess second, since I don't want to set it as default.)

Is there a way to do this short of deleting the accounts and re-creating them in the desired order? (I'm not sure that's even it -- I didn't see any logic to the way they were ordered before I started messing around with it, and I'm pretty sure that the account that was at the bottom was created before the one right above it.)

If you don't have an account you can create one now.
