While trying to track down a picture of "cesium atoms arranged to spell IBM" that [livejournal.com profile] fenwickrysen mentioned here, I came across this site. Under the picture of the people is a link to "Nanoworld Image Gallery". I'm amused at the way so many of these look like surface plots of mathematical expressions. I'm not surprised by that at all, and I know it sounds kind of "well, duh, what were you expecting", but it's still interesting to notice.

I found this "IBM" which is Xenon on Nickel (http://www.almaden.ibm.com/vis/stm/atomo.html).

According to this PDF from the Department of Energy (http://www.sc.doe.gov/production/bes/IWGN.Public.Brochure/IWGN.Nanotech.Brochure.pdfa), it was actually xenon atoms on nickel, and the PDF includes some pictures of the original construct.

Interesting.

grr. I was even at almaden.ibm.com, but then, as i was searching for "cesium" and not "xenon", it's not surprising I didn't find it. thanks.

Hrm , the link works from Google, but not here. Odd.

If you go here: http://www.science.doe.gov/bes/IWGN.Public.Brochure/welcome.htm You can just click on the brochure, which is the PDF I'm referring to above.
