This is my first post after having gotten XP running. The problem with install turned out to be the USB mouse, even though it was plugged via an adapter into a PS/2 port. The major obstacle yesterday was not the install, but getting it to allow me to make a dialup connection. It happily recognized the modem right off (unlike Win98 and Win2K, both of which I've had to fight with in this regard), but when I went to make a connection, modem was grayed out as a choice (along with PPPoE, not that I have that kind of connection), leaving only "always-on broadband". Turned out this was a known issue and there were several kb articles about it, and a little registry mucking solved the problem. It's odd that both that problem and the hiccup in usbhub.sys (or whatever) that caused the hang at 34 minutes during GUI install were stated to relate to SP1, which I didn't (obviously) already have, so I dunno, but that's how it turned out. Then I've been spending the last.. oh... eight or nine hours basically downloading the world, although doing it intelligently via the Windows Update Catalog instead of "live", whereby I can easily browse to a save-as location and therefore keep for further use without having to download again (important when you're on 56K dialup).
I am loving the "run this program under XX verison Windows emulation" thing, because it means that now my Sierra games will not only almost all run (which was hit-or-miss under Win2K), but have their sound again (O glorious cheesy MIDI!), which was something that had generally been the case with Win98 but that was lost completely with Win2K.
The computer itself actually seems happier, too. It's like the vibe I'm getting off it is like... breaking through onto a peak/plateau from a rough come-up on some drug. (I suppose that means there has to be a comedown, too. Oy. Maybe bad analogy, lol.)
