This picture pretty much encapsulates a lot of the stuff I want my name to be. Unfortunately "Twilight" is waaaay overdone, and I daresay "Evenstar" is, shall we say, taken. I can't think of anything else that sums up "very late evening sky with waxing crescent moon and evening star, preferably with tree silhouettes". I have not yet pinpointed my attraction to this kind of scene, by the way - I used to think I might have been born under this sort of tableau, but the moon was in waning gibbous phase when I was born, and the sky was much lighter (sunset 7:50 pm, end civil twilight 8:17 pm - a sky like that is closer to "end civil twilight", and I was born at 7:35). I have no idea if Venus was in a place to be the evening star on that day or not.

Umm... hmm... "blue crescent?"

The ending song from Outlaw Star, Hiiru no Tsuki, describes that kind of scene in its refrain, a sand-white daytime moon. A bit long for a name, though, and was originally in Japanese anyhow.

Anything I can think of comes out sounding straight out of Lady Pixie Moondrip (http://www.widdershins.org/vol3iss4/m9710.htm). It would be hard to keep a straight face with a name like that in a traditional witchcraft group, never mind rec.arts.mst3k.misc.

Re: this particular suggestion, "Blue Star" and "Silver Crescent" both happen to be names of traditions of Wicca and this would be ripe for confusion. Plus I just don't like it. :P (no offense)

Japanese isn't for me. I tried that once and it was one of the quickest names to start "itching" that I ever tried.

Given the Moon phase, it looks like you must have been born in 1978, then yes, Venus was in the right place to be an evening star. Additionally, Mars was only a degree or two away from Venus, and Spica (aka α virginis or the brightest star in Virgo) was nearly as close on the other side. (Not that Spica was likely to have been visible before sunset.)

Clever boy can reverse-engineer, can he? ;)

Hm, interesting. So basically, a similar sort of Mars-Venus-Spica thing we've been seeing recently. Odd.

How about naming yourself
“On the Possibility of Ascending to Mars ”? or “civil twilight"? ummm you could get them translated into latin! Or Elvish! Cletic Gaelic! Dwarf! UnderCommon! Klingon!
Or or or “Nifty photo of the moon and venus, collected from the web” translated into gaelic!

Civil Twilight, lol. As opposed to other Twilights out there who might be supposed to be Uncivil, then? :)

Translating into other languages has not so far produced satisfactory results. When I am able to pronounce Gaelic/Gaidhlig (sp?) words correctly, I often find that I don't like their sound, and of course then there is putting up with people constantly spelling them wrong and mispronouncing them themselves. Elvish is um.. a risky area to go into because of the fannish dimension (back to Lady Pixie Moondrip again), although I've tried that too. I've found a few I like (I did a poll a ways back, as I remember) but mostly they come across as too, i dunno, narrow in meaning?
