Oh, hey! Did I mention that the LCD monitor that I ordered on the 21st arrived today? No? Well, it did, and I'm quite pleased with it. So far I've seen no dead pixels, despite staring at close range with a variety of things being displayed, and as expected, it's got a slightly larger viewing area than the 17" CRT which is now sitting on the floor in front of my closet. The main benefit of this thing is that I can set it a good 6 inches farther back on my table, thus actually being at a comfortable range given where I sit because of the furniture in my room. And it's pretty and black and stuff. So yeah. If anyone else is thinking of buying an LCD panel, I can probably recommend the Planar PE170 (that'd be the 17" model - 15" is PE150) and the vendor Tiger Direct. (Less than a week is fairly impressive shipping from Florida.) Ease of use - I plugged it in and it worked. There is a driver/docs CD which I have yet to look at to see if it will improve anything, but it obviously isn't essential for acceptable operation.

I switch resolutions a lot. LCD is made for one single resolution, and anything except integer multiple or divisor of resolution will result in wonky lines and fonts. LCD's have a number of good features to them. CRT is more flexible, though.

*nods* True. I made just that remark when my father was looking at it. At 1024x768, fonts, especially, look funky. But I don't find it too small to see at 1280x1024 so that's where it is. The only thing I really switch resolutions for is when viewing winamp visualizations in fullscreen mode, and I have to set them way low anyway to get a bearable framerate, so it's not a problem. The only annoying thing is that all my desktop wallpapers are 1024x768 and if I allow it to stretch them, I get visible interpolation artifacts. Ah well!
