Besides Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp, I personally think that Brent Spiner could also have done an admirable job of playing Willy Wonka.

Opinions?

I agree, but I don't think he'd be quite as good as either of the others (assuming Depp is up to his usual standard, and I'm quite impressed with the trailer). A god friend of mine bemoans the fact that Christopher Walken is not playing Willy Wonka, which I regard as a somewhat odd, although not impossible idea.

Hmmm.. I think I'd have to agree with "odd, but not impossible". Heh.

Yes! I haven't seen any part of the one Depp is in, yet, so I can't form an opinion of his performance (a lot falls to the director, too), but I think Mr. Spiner would be excellent as Willy Wonka from what I've seen of his acting abilities.

Haven't seen any clips yet of Depp in the role, but I have seen Brent Spiner in roles other than Star Trek, including comedy, and I wholeheartedly agree.

the original cast memo called for Marilyn Manson.

THAT'S a film I'd like to see...

Absolutely. Although "Willy Wonka" terrified me as a child and teen and, based on the trailer, the new re-telling will be even more trippy and looming.
