Neopets has plushie toys of various pets out in Happy Meals at McDonald's right now. There are 109 different toys. They have a page with a checklist, encouraging you to try to collect them all. Now, even assuming you got a different toy each time (good luck), you would still have to eat one hundred and nine Happy Meals to get all the toys. Is this "Super Size Me" all over again?
For those not wanting to eat that many hamburgers, you can buy the toys separately, for something like $2 apiece, which sounds like a ridiculous investment to me.
enotsola speculates that a complete, unopened set might be able to be sold on eBay someday for more than it was bought for, but still.

Actually, there's nothing that says you have to actually eat the Happy Meals. You could just buy the meal, extract the toy, and then throw away the rest. Or give it to someone else, like a random homeless person on the street, who'd probably rather have food than no-food.
That US$2.00 to get the toy without a meal sounds like a reasonable deal, if the price for the meal is as high as I think it is. (I haven't bought a Happy Meal in ages, so I'm really unclear on how much they cost.)
