LOL. Yesterday I was considering filling in the little form on Dreamwidth where you can request more invite codes and they will consider it; I laughed with [livejournal.com profile] enotsola about inserting the reason "Friends on LJ disgruntled over latest kerfuffles." In the end I didn't click "submit". But here I have just got an unsolicited email with ten shiny new invite codes. I think someone's watching the goings-on. ^_-

So, anyone want one?

FYI, I would have laughed my rear end off if you'd actually put that down. (Hi! 1/2 DW owner here, wandered by via search.) :)

Oh hi!

(Denise? Mark?)

Denise! (I don't think Mark reads LJ anymore; he certainly doesn't comment here. I just keep an eye out for people having problems through various searches, etc.)

I suggested she put "LJ are a buncha bitches" but she figured prettying it up a bit would have been a better choice. And the word disgruntled is always a good choice.

It's a really fun word to type, too!

I wouldn't mind one, but I just signed up of a year's premium service here and as annoying as this link stunt is, I just can't bring myself to bail on 11 months worth of subscription. Although I woouln't mind seeing a link to a Dreamwidth journal to see how they compare.

What's so good about Dreamwidth over LJ? I've seen a lot of journal-sites come and go, but never had enough friends making the jump to stick with a different one.

Virtually identical, plus some improvements IMO (although they don't do things like voice posting and Scrapbook, at least not now). They did after all start with the same code base. You can look at my own journal there for example http://elethian.dreamwidth.org .

Well, for one thing, they're not evil. ^_- Most recently, rather than bow to first PayPal and then Google Checkout's (who were themselves responding to demands from, erm, Determined Parties who were up in arms about OMG PRON or something) demands that they remove (protected speech) adult content to be able to continue using their payment services, they told those services where to stick it and are currently working on finding a provider who won't put such strictures in place. Compare to "strikethrough" and "boldthrough" and such debacles on LJ.

You can separate your reading list into those whom you watch and those who have access to your posts. That is, you can watch someone's posts without automatically giving them access to your "friends-locked" posts, and you can give them access without having to watch them. (It's possible to finagle something similar on LJ by using filters, but at DW it's baked in.)

They have a killer journal-import tool to migrate your content (comments included, with the user ids getting converted to Open-ID), userpics, tags, and filters from another service. (I believe this is now working to migrate a community, too.)

You can set up auto-crossposting, so that when you post to DW it will automatically crosspost to LJ, IJ, whatever (I forget what's available besides those), and, more impressively, if you edit the Dreamwidth post, it updates your other journals with the new content.

They have a different form of the lj user=tag which allows you to specify the journaling site and it will create the proper profile link and use the right user icon. E.g., I type <user site="livejournal.com" name="starlightforest"> and that will properly show as [livejournal.com profile] starlightforest both on DW and, I think, in an IJ crosspost (!) without my having to manually do all the messy constructing of the link in this fashion: < a href="http://www.livejournal.com/userinfo.bml?user=starlightforest">< img src="http://stat.livejournal.com/img/userinfo.gif" border="0" style="vertical-align: bottom;">< a href="http://www.livejournal.com/users/starlightforest/">< span style="font-weight: bold;">starlightforest

this off the top of my head...
