grr. this was my umm.. fifth? sixth? attempt to login to livejournal. i'm not too annoyed with things like pages loading slowly, but i'm getting really fed up with complete timeouts. that's just rubbish.

First off, let me just say that I hate being awakened at 5:15 in the morning with menstrual cramps, especially at a time of year when that means the damn sun is already rising, and doubly especially when I had just managed to get to sleep about 45 minutes ago (judging from the fact that I turned out the light at 5 minutes to 4 and it takes me a while to fall asleep). (cranky much?) I did manage to get back to sleep a bit after 6, after some aspirin and stuff, but sleep interruption not happy.

Anyways. You all remember that chakra activity test thing? Well, I looked at the "chakra opening exercises" section of the site, figured what the heck, and was experimenting with the mudras and mantras given there for each of the chakras. On several of them, but especially with the one for root chakra (tip of right forefinger and thumb touching, forming a circle), I got a sensation that I frequently get when attempting to work with energy: a sort of pressure and tingling that is quite uncomfortable, which generally manifests at the point of contact or the place where I'm trying to gather or move energy.

I generally find myself unable to bear more than a few seconds of the feeling before I have to stop. In the case of the root chakra mudra, it was concentrated at that point where the fingers touched, feeling somewhat like electricity or static, almost painful. (I hate the feeling of static or electric shock, anyway. Electricity is not my thang.) I'm not sure what to think of this. On the one hand, maybe it's just the way energy is supposed to feel, and I should learn to put up with it. On the other, maybe it's some sort of sign, or I am a natural resistor and shouldn't even be trying, or something.

There's a lot of good chakra info in Anodea Judith's "Wheels of Life" fwiw. and i think you're on Elfkind, to have seen the recent discussion on there - ?

Totally useless from me, but there you have it.

I actually unsubscribed from elfinkind quite a ways back. at the time I just wasn't finding myself interested in what was being discussed. maybe I should think about resubscribing. I've heard of the book you mention, but not read it. thanks for the idea.

OK, i asked Sindar a bit about this tonight, as this is more his area. He sez there are a number of mudras, and with the one you describe there are 3 different ways of forming it. #1 is the Perfect Circle, with thumb and index meeting. #2 is index slightly over thumb, #3 is thumb slightly over index. Each means something different. The thumb is the symbol of the All That Is, the index of the individual personality, and which mudra one chooses reflects which you prefer to be predominant. #2 is for keeping more of your Self in the picture, and might be more comfortable.

As for Elfkind - recently Ry'Kandar's lady (forget her name) had posted about doing some color meditation work and being surprised at results, as she is more the grounded science-y type i guess. Some of the resulting discussion was in a related vein, which is why i mentioned it.

#1 is what's pictured, and what I had been doing.

Trying the other two right now, contrary to what you suggest might be the case, #2 is distinctly uncomfortable (the "electric" sensation being concentrated on the pad of the index finger, where the thumbnail touches it), whereas I'm not noticing anything uncomfortable about #3. Aside from a differing symbolism, would choosing one of the three affect anything else? I.e. is it recommended that someone who's just beginning avoid or favour any particular version, or is it just personal choice?

Sindar is checking notes. In the meantime - i had always used #3 myself, not sure if i ever saw it somewhere or if it just Felt right.

OK, #3 symbolizes enlightenment, connection to the Divine, calmness, and was what the Buddha used. Not too shabby. He asks, are you sitting when you do it, lotus, half-lotus - ? He also says the point of mudras in meditation is to create (or complete?) an electrical circuit in the body. fwiw. Could be that is an over-amping for you, tho..

Gotta Zzz..
