I don't know whether this is something I actually read in the backlog of posts at dirtSimple (which [livejournal.com profile] syleniel pointed me at the other day*, or whether my brain helpfully did a mashup of all of that mass (and I did skim it all, though only read about five or eight posts in any depth -- a lot of it is promotion of his books and seminars, which is fine, but the style of it comes across as rather oily to me) with the Reiki ideals or ethics, which all start with "Just for today...", but served up to my conscious mind in the form of a dream late this morning, it actually kind of sunk in for me (at least, I think):

If there is something you want to do that has to be done on a continual basis, for weeks, months, or even years for you to gain the benefit you want to gain, then just (merely, only) do it today. Not only today and then stop, but only think about getting it done today. That's small and manageable, right? And since every day is today, you only ever have to do it today! You don't have to worry about how you are going to keep it up for X amount of time. Just for today -- because like small change, "today" adds up. And if for some reason you fail to do it today, admit that, and then stop the thought process. Don't go on to think about how you will do it tomorrow, or otherwise make up for today. Just stop, and when the next day comes, start over at "just do it today".

("Today adds up" was the key "ohhhh...." phrase for me, hence the title of this post.)

* - Yesterday I read a post along similar themes from a totally unrelated mailing list, and I asked the author if I could reproduce it here, because it went along with two other things I had seen and I was amused by the "in threes" gig. Those two other things were dirtSimple, and [livejournal.com profile] unseelie's post of a few days ago on unhelpful mental contortions. Little did I know those were even more connected, because a couple of the dirtSimple posts mentioned the same author that [livejournal.com profile] unseelie had been reading, so that added extra flavour, where "flavour" probably equals sound effect: the universe knocking with all its huge amount of mass on [livejournal.com profile] tass's noggin, yet somehow, it can't break a few centimeters of bone unless she lets it.

In other news, ACK! I have no tea! And I boiled a kettle this morning totally forgetting this fact, even though I had consumed the last of it less than 12 hours ago! ("Habit"? What is this word you say?) So there I was with a kettle of boiled water and only whatever I might unearth in the cupboard to pour it over, and now I am drinking some kind of "mocha cappucino" drink mix my boss gave me for Christmas some years ago. It's pretty foul, but it's hot, and it's likely better than the coffee I could get in Staff Development, which is brewed at the crack of oh-my-gods-Mary-Kay-why-are-you-at-work-at-that-hour every morning, so by the time I get to it, it's, uh, past its prime. So, sad me. Must hie me to Whole Foods for a stopgap and then to Cost Plus this weekend for some Ty-Phoo or something.
