From Firefox 3.0a8 release notes:

Firefox now quits properly (instead of just being killed) when Windows is shut down or restarted (see bug 333907)

Oho, so that's why Session Manager thinks Firefox crashed last time if I shut down Windows without first exiting Firefox.

I do generally too, but sometimes (like when restarting for windows update) I don't bother.

Not outright killed the process, just shut down the laptop. That way, when I get to where I'm going, I just turn it back on and open Firefox and I'm good to go.
