zodiac annoyance

This whole "new sign" thing (besides being silly) isn't new. Apparently it's Babylonian but they decided to discard it. I remember reading a book once when the local public library still had the adult non-fiction over where the sci-fi/fantasy fiction is now which talked about how Ophiuchus was "really" in the zodiac and laid out dates for the "thirteen" signs like they had invented it. This body memory of where I picked the book off the shelf dates it minimum 15 years ago, probably more, and the book itself was hardly crisp and new at the time. So.

Someone on nonfluffypagans commented that it was old news but what was new was that now people could tweet it and Facebook it and whatever-the-hell-it so the idea would spread faster than any rationality.

Yeah, we did this thing as an exercise in the first year of high school science class cause our teacher was really into astronomy and frankly any excuse to look at star charts was cool in her book.

Yeah, we covered this in "Astronomy" class because the professor wanted us to know what the astronomical zodiac is versus the astrological.

The uproar this has caused has made me LOL lots this week.

In case I haven't made it abundantly clear, I hate astrology, so hearing about all of this (both the announcement after having discussed it without knowing it was in the news and after the "it's old news" posts) has made my cynical, anti-astrology side happy. Well, save for the amount of coverage.

Yep, it's old news. I had a class that covered this, too, back when Pluto was still a planet. In class, I had decided that I liked Ophiuchus because it's pronounced "Oh fuck us." Tee hee!

With the recent bringing-up-again of it, now everybody who heard about it in class in the same way that I did can hear the rest of the argument. It's sort of interesting timing, too, since I just finally got interested in astrology this week.
