I assume it's a long exposure and you don't quite see that just looking up, but still. Wow.

Indeed. I had not realized that when people talked about the Milky Way, they were talking about something that was quite so vivid and obvious once you were in an area with absolutely no clouds and very little artificial light. That's my single most striking memory of looking at the sky.
