Has anyone tried honey-flavored vodka (like this)? On the one hand it seems like a thing an Arethinn would like. On the other it could be terrible and cloying and if I want honey vodka I should just mix honey and vodka.
However, my rule of thumb about buying liquor is to just do it - buy the smallest bottle they sell, just to try it, because often there's really no way to tell unless you just buckle down and do it. If I don't like it by itself, odds are that I can probably find something to mix it with that will make it non-objectionable so that it isn't a waste, and then I just don't ever buy it again (unless the mixer somehow was awesomely stellar and something I wanted to permanently have available in my collection).
There has only ever been ONE liquor that did not really do well no matter what I tried, and it was a really terrible, artificial chemical tasting "grape flavored" vodka, and that one has put me off fruit flavored vodkas. I was probably not the only person who didn't like it because I haven't seen it since a short time after we got it. Unfortunately that ONE TIME there was no small "trial size" so it also took me 3 years to get through the 1.75l bottle, it was really awful. The only flavored vodka I get with any regularity is the Whipped one, and I typically use it for mixing flavored shots (it goes well with many things... fruity rums or brandies, chocolate liqueurs... anything that could stand a squirt of whipped cream, because it does taste shockingly like whipped cream with a good strong liquor kick). The same company's "cake" and "cookie dough" vodkas are also pretty good, if you can find them.
Have you had honey bourbon before? I will say, that stuff is pretty good!!
The smallest bottle in this case is the 750 ml, I think; don't think I've found sample bottles.
I'm pretty wary of most fruit-flavored vodkas too. I don't think I would like grape and I know my husband would hate it (bad memories of grape-flavored medicines).
I've tried a few honey bourbons/whiskeys. Between Jim Beam, Jack Daniels, and Wild Turkey, I can't remember which one I thought was pretty okay and which seemed to me to fall either in the "ew, gross, cloying" category I'm afraid this vodka might. We tried Bushmills Irish Honey too, but IIRC that was hard to call "honey" anything as it didn't taste different than the regular product to me.
Oh, I'm very familiar with mead. A fondness for mead and honey (and Barenjager, a honey liqueur) is one of the reasons I wondered whether a honey-flavored vodka would be any good.

I rather suspect that a properly well-filtered vodka would add a nice kick to honey. Vodka is supposed to be characterized by a total lack of flavor after filtering, which is what makes it so ideal to use as a mixer for party drinks.
First, hi, I'm Ninquelen on tumblr and that's where I came from, Your blog is one of places I visit quite regular (I should just start following you, really) ;) There is vodka-like honey alcoholic beverage in Poland called krupnik (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krupnik), I drank it couple of times, and I actually liked it. Usually I hate vodka with passion, so I would say it may be good thing.
