Dear Hive Mind:

I ordered chirashi sushi today at a restaurant. I recognized everything in it (ohboy. Maguro, sake, ikura, tai, hamachi, tamago, tako, kani, possibly hokkigai, ebi, shiro maguro or ono?... um, I think that's all the meat? then wakame, shiso leaf, daikon...) except a slice of something that was similar in shape to the long, thin, triangular slice of carrot, but it was yellow and pebbly. It tasted vaguely seafoody, but then it was buried in among all the fish, so that may not be telling. It was a bit chewy, not soft and tender like raw fish, nor crunchy like the carrot. Looking at pictures of uni and considering its expense, I'm pretty sure it wasn't that (although I could be wrong), especially since that's listed in the restaurant's "super chirashi" which isn't what I ordered.

Soo... what the hell did I just eat?

It sounds to me like this type of pickled daikon that I've had on sushi before. Was it sort of fibrous like a carrot, but somewhat less so?

If that's the stuff that's inside an oshinko roll, I'm pretty sure it wasn't that (I've had those). It wasn't sour nor fibrous at all; it was almost like a really, really firm gelatin. I can't seem to find any pictures of chirashis that include something like it, though I can see ones with slices of takuan. Hmm.

Uni is very soft and custardy, so it certainly wasn't that. Odds are it is pickled daikon, called takuan, considering the consistency, dish, and color. Slightly less likely, it may also be pickled burdock root, know as gobō in Japanese, or pickled bamboo shoots, know as menma.

See above comment about takuan. It was chewy like very firm gelatin, not the stuff inside an oshinko roll that I'm familiar with. I can't find any pictures of gobō that seem to resemble it. And it definitely wasn't bamboo shoot.
