Why is it that, in the place where the Internet was half fucking born, I can't get decent Internet service? Where decent is defined rather liberally (by today's standards) as 384+kbps and reliably on? Right now I'm on a rare (over the past several days rare, anyway) good 50.6k connection. Where "good" is defined as "stays connected and I don't have to redial every five fucking minutes".

I've been sharing this for over two days with the other two occupants since the local free wireless seems to have gone crazy again (= won't assign IPs, and when it will, nothing comes down the pipe) and we don't have any other alternatives.

It's really this last that I'm ranting against -- this shouldn't even be an issue. But I'm out on the back forty of a copper wire loop, so no DSL, and cable and satellite are both unfeasible for various reasons of their own.

It's stupid, I repeat.

AT&T, I beg thee start stringing fiber. Plz?

Have you looked into Verizon FiOS? I'm not sure if it's available here or not, but an acquaintance of mine in Portland signed up for it. Good stuff.

What's the medium here?

Fiber. They do fiberoptic to your house.

Um.

You mean they dig up the street and invade a public utility?

Wtf?

I'm sure this is far outside my price range, anyway.

Well, they certainly dig up your lawn. And it's cheaper than cable Internet, for a slightly faster speed. (I didn't believe it when I first heard about it either.) $40/mo for 5 megabit as opposed to $42/mo for 4 megabit with cable. Worth looking into, although I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out not to be available where you are, for the exact reason you cited.

Nope, not available. Also, it sounds like you have to switch to Verizon phone service, which is not a change I have the power to dictate in the household.
