The idea of trying to claim asylee/refugee status on my application for permanent residence in Canada is seeming more and more plausible every day... yikes.

Well, since I got engaged to a Canadian two years ago, yes, it's been swirling around. I was actually actively doing something about it around this time last year, but then they passed a new Immigration Act in June and it meant the forms changed as well as the "pass mark" (the number of points you have to make on the application for them to accept you), which wasn't so bad in itself (except that whether I make the pass mark, even with my several years of job experience and bachelor's degree, is still in doubt), but it took them months to get their act together and get all the proper new information up on the website... and then the "police clearance" (a stamp from the FBI certifying that I do not have a federal criminal record) I had gotten expried because that's only good for 6 months from date of issue and... well suffice it to say I'm actively working on it again now, but it's not as simple as people sometimes portray "escaping to Canada" to be.
I'm laughing and smiling reading this. It's certainly an interesting thought. Whether or not it actually got you in, it would definitely put your application into a completely different path to approval.
Personally, I'd rather flee some place warmer, but not many of the warmer countries are known for even pretending to be democratic. If this keeps up, unfortunately, they may in actuality be more democratic before too long.
