It's funny... I just went outside and could smell fires. Six months ago, this would certainly be fireplaces. This time of year, it's barbecues. Interesting how we still have "bonfires" at significant times of year... the sacred currents can change themselves to fit our modern reality.

Today was pleasantly useless in a practical sense.. I should have put some gas in my car and taken a shower, but I didn't. Neither was strictly necessary to do today. My "commute" to work hardly deserves the label (it's just over 5 miles round-trip), so my car will certainly survive another day without filling it up. As for bathing, it's just more convenient to do that on the weekend since I don't have to do it after coming home from work (I never shower in the morning). I'm not actually dirty yet.

So instead of doing anything "useful", I went through about twenty pages of andwritten notes and distilled out the stuff that was more "pure" (see earlier entries), went through all my back computerized notes and deleted similar dross, rearranged my altar to conform to the setup all the note-purifying and last night's energy exercises had resulted in a "vision" of, took a few photographs of the sprinkler and water on the sidewalk when my dad was watering the lawn, and and made two mixtapes to keep in the car.

Speaking of my car...

In high school I picked up the idea/habit/idiosyncrasy of considering cars to be spaceships, and assigning them names, classes and notional crew rosters (usually one's friends). As with my own self, I struggled with names and was never really satisfied, but settled on Elbereth at some earlyish point. I don't remember what class designation I gave it at the time.

Shortly after I had my first accident, Elbereth became Suggilous class instead of whatever it had been. "Suggilous" means "black and blue, as if bruised". This is an apt description, since its native colour is metallic blue-gray, and the accident resulted in the replacement of the hood and one "eyelid" with primer-black parts. "Suggilous class" has stuck, since it's appropriate and (in my opinion) subtly clever.

Following in my own footsteps, however, my car seemed lately to have grown quite bored or disillusioned with the name Elbereth, especially as it aged past 120,000 miles. I agonized for a while over what I would re-name it when the odometer turned to 130,000, which would mark nearly 50,000 miles of my driving it, in a little over six and a half years. I recalled[livejournal.com profile] fenwickrysen posting something about how his cars seemed to tell him their own names, so early last week I tried just that, and asked the car to tell me what name it wanted. I was awfully perplexed to get an answer of "Euphrates" (as in the river). This rapidly became "Euphonia" and we sort of left off there.

I was pondering this a few days ago, and noticed that there seemed to be a sound-pattern afoot, rather than either of those being quite the right word. And then, it hit me... Eponyma. This would be a feminization/corruption of "eponymous", which means "self-named" (when a band or musician puts out an album with just their own name serving as title, that's said to be an eponymous album). It solves the whole problem of the name having to mean or describe something, conveying the idea that the car is just itself, and its name is "I am me." (Upon relating this discovery to enotsola, he quipped, "So, is this name for the car, or for you?" :P )

She'll turn 130,000 tomorrow as I drive to work... so happy rebirthday, Eponyma!
