I am not a "woman". I don't know if I ever will be (if this is connected to bearing children, then the answer is "no"), but I'm not one now. I am also (at 28.75ish) getting a bit old for "girl". And even if that's not age-defined, I just don't feel like one. "Young woman", to me, still refers to a "girl", just one who's over the age of, oh, 16. (My high school graduation age is entirely coincidental.) "Young lady" is an epithet -- something you call someone who's misbehaving (I often use this phrase tongue-in-cheek to chide my own mother, age 63, about something). "Female" is scientific -- "the female of the species" [...is more deadly than the male?] -- and doesn't make a great noun. Anything else I can think of, like "chick", is too slangy for general use. So....?

Okay... three people on the first page of my flist have all posted their Free Will horoscopes today, but none of them are my sign (Sagittarius, Libra, Capricorn), so here's mine.

Virgo Horoscope for week of May 10, 2007

I was enjoying a leisurely bike ride in a rural neighborhood where I'd never been. The houses were sparsely placed amidst overgrown meadows. The temperature was balmy. My endorphins had kicked in and the fragrance of wildflowers had rendered me giddy. Then my mood shifted suddenly. While rolling downhill on a one-lane road, I hit a speed bump--freakishly, unexpectedly, right in the middle of paradise. Why was it there? My bike stopped cold and I flew through the air, landing awkwardly. The damage was minimal, and the shock was a bit invigorating. Still, I advise you, Virgo, to watch out for and avoid a comparable speed bump out there in the frontier you're exploring. There's no inherent karmic necessity for you to experience an inconvenient interruption like mine. Add 10 percent more caution to your roving and rambling.

Since I'm not currently exploring any frontier, nor "roving and rambling", this is pretty meaningless to me. (In fact, Brezsny's horoscopes are almost invariably meaningless to me, which is why I don't follow them.) But maybe someone else out there is a Virgo, and cares.

[livejournal.com profile] dancinglights brought up the term "lady" and its uses, and I made a remark myself in a comment to someone else about how I thought maybe people just used my name rather than a generic term if they needed to refer to me, but it actually does make me curious what word or words other people might use for me. Out of the following choices I think I would mostly use "girl" for myself (although as mentioned, I think I may be growing out of it). You?

(Not that many of you are locals, but hey.)

Pacific Coast Farmers' Market Association

This comes up because there was an article in the paper today about how some of these markets have banned smoking, although they are open-air markets (where California law, to my knowledge, only prohibits smoking in indoor public spaces). Here nor there to me -- what I was after was the fairly massive (I think) list of markets in local counties. Woot!
