There was an extra $742.65 (pre-tax) in this month's paycheck.

Let me tell you two of the neatest words ever: COLA retro.

(COLA = "cost-of-living adjustment", "retro" means it was not only a whatever-percent raise from this point forward, but also retroactive for about the past six months, hence the fact that it shows up in a lump sum on this paycheck.)

I got $300 recently through accidental insurance fraud (long story): unexpected money is a very pleasant thing. This is unJesus Dave, by the way. Lovely seeing you this weekend, see you again probably in a year...

It wasn't actually truly unexpected. Since we're a union shop here we get COLAs on some sort of schedule. (Coke or Pepsi at 2:00 on the dot, rain or shine!) It might be every year or every two years; I'd just forgotten about it.

Of course, the taxes plus the fact that I have my paycheck divided in half into two bank accounts, one of which I purposely ignore, means that I netted only about $260 from this. But hey, $260 is $260.
