Thought on why I prefer small-medium groups (3-8 people or so) to larger groups, and to one-on-one situations: There's enough people that entertainment tends to self-generate, and I don't feel pressure to be sparkling; yet there's few enough that I can't easily be ignored in a corner somewhere.
