it's not supposed to make sense. it's GAINAX taking the piss on the entire anime genre, including some obvious potshots at themselves [with all the Evangelion references]. =) you just sit back and enjoy the ride...
I look at it as Gaimax creating their own genre train wreck. They had Eva (giant robots, loss and angst) and His and Her (surreal hyper girl-meets boy coming of age shoujo) so they figured "hey, let's try surreal hyper boy meets girl with giant robots, loss and angst!".
I found it incredibly compelling, and it sorta makes sense (at least as internal consistency) eventually. Probably my fave series of all time. A friend of mine put it best though: "it speaks to me, but I have no idea what the fuck it's saying", and I think that generally sums it up.
