Grr. I would like to switch to Thunderbird, but a major annoyance for me is that I cannot delete a message while focus is on the message pane; it has to be on its entry in the folder contents. And it isn't a simple shift-tab to jump back one, either, because it tabs through the header fields in the message pane, so it's actually like four keypresses (even when viewing "normal" instead of "full" headers). Outlook Express allows me to delete the message from either pane.

I'm reasonably satisfied with the way it threads newsgroup messages, though, which is the major thing that's always stopped me from switching away from Outlook before.

if newsgroups is the main issue, why not simply use a dedicated news client instead? that's the approach i've taken for more than a decade and i'm rather pleased with how it plays out.

I would agree. Forte Agent I've liked in the past. For email I currently use Pegasus - which I found an improvement to Outlook Express.
