East as first direction because of focus on sun = life (to those people). Choosing to put another direction first is choosing to align with different energies. In other words, what we decide to perceive as "first" creates a certain matrix which is germane to certain energies. Deciding to focus on west or north for "dark" energies, for example. (Yay shadow.)
