Is this actually a meteorological term, or is this just a shorter way of saying "um, some kind of slushy mix of rain and ice and snow and... fuck, we don't know"?
i believe it is an actual meteorological term, even though it means exactly what you said -- a mix of rain, snow, sleet and possibly freezing rain... in other words, a cold wet smeggin' mess!
Dude, what city is that? It's obviously not San Francisco, or anywhere else in the Bay Area. Not with those temperatures. Given what I know of you, I'm guessing Toronto?
(And, having lived in New England, I agree with your estimation of what "wintry mix" means. You do get weather like that on occasion; slush and sleet and snow and hail all mixed together. It's pretty yucky.)
My all time favorite forecast was up in the Boston area, on WCRB:
"Today will be partly cloudly, with a bit of sun possible. Fog will be heavy at times. There's a chance of showers, possibly with sleet and freezing rain. Snow is possible."
They hit on several more possibilities, regarding wind or lack thereof, and basically covered everything theoretically possible - or even plausible - for the Boston area at that time of year.
They could have made it shorter (and far more accurate) by saying: "We have no frickin' clue, look out your window."
Anyway, I suppose that's what a "Wintry Mix" is. Either that or a bunch of Christmas and Solstice tunes on shuffle play.
