What do you do when there's a White Elephant party (which you can't really escape) and you don't have a white elephant to bring? Sometimes I've fudged with things in my house which I simply didn't want, although they weren't really white elephants, but I can't think of any such objects I might have this year. I hate to go to Goodwill and pick up something stupid, but what else can I really do?

The only advice I can think of is that if you're going to have to buy something, a garage sale seems less tainted somehow than Goodwill. The items would be one step closer to actual elephant-hood, although I grant you it's probably a subtle distinction.

Take canned goods out of the pantry. At our department's White Elephant exchange last year, the cans of refried beans got the biggest howls of laughter.

Find out if someone you know has an elephant that you can get rid of for them.

Unfortunately I don't know anyone close by enough that I could get said elephant by next week...
