I notice that some people selected "the hell is surf music?" in the poll. The best-known surf band is (was), of course, the Beach Boys. You know, "Surfin' USA"? "Good Vibrations"? "California Girls"? Well, this particular sub-genre of music is alive and well and it's not only a bunch of crazy Californians (or Australians, or anywhere else you might think of when you think "surfing") that make it. razorjak suggested The Isotopes in his comment, a "Rochester NY surf-rock band with a mad scientest/geeks in labcoats schtick." (And you know how I likes me the mad scientist schtick.)

I thought you meant some new genre of surf music. Beach Boys are old school! So am I, of course, but still! :-)

Well, there is instrumental surf vs. vocal surf (i.e., Dick Dale, The Surfaris vs. Jan & Dean, Beach Boys).

Well, ok. Sounded like he thought I was talking about something else entirely. Boy would this be fun to crossbreed... I mean, imagine like all the sub-genres there are in electronic music! We could have tribal surf, Euro-surf, deep surf...

oh, it needs to happen. Or, it sort of is, in a way. Portishead's song from a few years ago now, what was the name of it? "Nobody loves me, it's true..." anyway, that guitar break in there was clearly surf-guitar-oriented.

While not *directly* surf-music, what they call the "psychobilly" extension of rockabilly is full of Dick Dale guitar inspiration -- The Cramps and especially Reverend Horton Heat owe a debt to the surf guitar. Some pure rockabilly bands have a bit of surf in them as well.

There's also two "sci fi surf" bands I can think of: Man Or Astroman?, and the Spoozys. Man Or Astroman? is pure surf rock with science fiction themes. The Spoozys is more eclectic but the guitar is very surf-oriented. There's also a couple of bands oriented towards horror surf-rock (e.g. the Moon-Rays)

technically, the beach boys fits under the catagory of "surf pop" whereas true "surf" music is more like dick dale and the del-tones :)
