The number 283 has been popping out at me a lot today, in the form of total number of pages in books that I am cataloging (it's one of the factors I have to check to determine if a book matches the OCLC record we are proposing to download). So my first thought as this is not a "master number" or anything like that was gematria.
Here's a list of some Hebrew equivalents:
Ark of Jehovah.
to bind, to be hard, strong; cypress, gopher-tree.
to seize, grasp.
treasured gold.
memorial; record, account.
a seed.
pr. n. "Crusher", Nergal, a god of the Cuthites thought to be representative of the planet Mars.

I'm intrigued that it is both "treasured gold" and "unrefined silver". Hm.
And some in English, although I am not certain what numerological method they are using to calculate the value of these words:
