OK, people, look. I refuse to accept that I am a bad person and have contributed to the power of The Man™ because I bought [livejournal.com profile] enotsola a frigging Valentine's Day card. I like sending him gifts and cards. I do so at the slightest excuse (i.e.: commercialized holidays) and often without "excuses" either (i.e.: random other times of the year, whenever I feel like it). I don't think he gets a lot of fun stuff in the mail. I am not artistic enough to draw my own pictures and my poetry fountain seems to have gotten turned off several years ago, so when I come across a card that makes me giggle and say "he would like this", I don't think there's anything wrong in buying it and sending it. I don't feel that I have to or else. So I am not going to feel guilt and shame at having done so at one of the commerically approved times of the year.

Ummm... Why would anyone call you that just because you gave someone a Valentine's day card?? I find that somewhat preposterous. I'm planning on posting something on LJ and giving a few to some of my friends (now that I have the ability to do so)... Of course in this case it *will* be my creation... Just to warn you...

While I have heard most of these sentiments before, and agree with them to an extent, I still feel that those who choose to use the day as it was meant - to honour and do something special for one's signifinant other/whoever it feels right honour, so be it. One doesn't have to buy anything huge to get the sentiment across. All it takes is a little imagination, and a card isn't exactly pricey.

Besides, it this rather fast paced society, maby a little reminder that it helps to be nice or do something nice to those close to you isn't a bad thing.

Well, I hope you realize that my views on Valentine's day are not intended to encourage guilt and shame in anybody. Well, maybe I'd like to see a few ad executives feel guilt and shame about it, but not anyone like you. If you get genuine joy out of Vday, more power to you. I'm really not trying to discourage anybody from sending cards to their sweeties or any such thing. I just feel that personally, the holiday is kind of poisoned for me by the way it's marketed. I get really offended by and pissed off at the *industries* that I think are cheapening things like this, not at individual people who celebrate them. So don't feel you have to defend your enjoyment of Vday on my account.
