Just 6 weeks left to work and 3 more after that until moving day. O.o Sounds like it might be time to get off my fanny about reserving a rental car, storage facility, moving trailer, and all that business.. funny how "three months" is so much bigger of a number than "two months".

I was looking around my room last night thinking about packing, and I have really no idea how I am going to manage to bring all my pairs of wings with me without damage. Fortunately my most fragile pair is already there because I entirely forgot to bring them back to California last August after having left them there on purpose in March. Three other pairs fold flat and will probably be fine. But two other pairs (who needs five pairs of wings? ...not enough, says I!) are all bumpy and lumpy in shape and had to be mailed carefully. I hestitate ("...thou shalt NOT hesitate!") to try to put them in a moving truck. Hmm.. maybe I should just mail them again. It would be kind of pricey because of the unwieldy size of the package, but it might be safer.

Really though, the wings are the least of my worries since they are not actually breakable nor terribly valuable. I'm a lot more concerned about all my electronics, because I don't think I have any of the original packaging anymore. (Should have kept the monitor box when I got a new one on warranty last year.. d'oh!) It's going to take tons of bubble wrap. And that large television I got from [livejournal.com profile] the_misha and [livejournal.com profile] tiggrrl is going to be a big fat hassle since I don't even know where I'm going to get a big enough box. (Do you suppose I could hit up a Circuit City or something? Surely they must throw away tons of TV boxes.)

Yay wings! Is there any way you can carry them yourself instead of having the movers take them?

I once had a summer job working for North American Van Lines and fragile items (like lamp shades for example) are packed individually in boxes. You should be able to get boxes at a local UHaul. Mark as FRAGILE on 4 or 5 sides so the movers see it. Do not worry about volume; just do what you have to to get all your important items packed safely for the long trip. Moving companies charge by weight, not by volume. If you're having the moving company pack, make sure you supervise and tell them certain items are FRAGILE and VALUABLE and they will take care of it.

If you're packing yourself, remember it's a long haul between the west coast and your destination. This means that small vibration and rocking, can abrade and even wear through items. So you will want to use bubble pack, packing paper, towels or blankets to wrap items to prevent destructive rubbing. So for the same reason, it's also good to keep fragile things and heavy things in separate boxes (like shot puts and glass statuary).

You can get boxes in different shapes; and you may be looking for the kind of box used to pack framed pictures in. These boxes are rectangular and thin and may be more suitable since they would take up less volume. Did'nt know you could rent a trailer by volume. What will they think of next? ;)
