I don't particularly feel like re-typing this, so sorry for the formatting, as it was kluged together out of an MSN convo.

I've just spent all day in the hospital with my mother
see, this sunday, she managed to , like, re-tweak her back, same injury or whatever she had about 5 years ago
monday, it seemed ok, so she went about business as usual
but lily picked that day to go find some cat shit in the yard (how it got there, we dunno) and roll in it
so she had an emergency bath, which involved my mother bending over for like an hour, with predictable results
so tuesday she stayed in bed and took some muscle relaxant she had from last time, etc
but apparently it did nothing and got worse
she woke me up 7:30 this morning crying
it took us like an hour to get out of kaiser the answer that we should in fact go to the emergency room
so we showed up there a little before 9, and though we were the first there for triage at the moment, still the nurse was by herself and it took a while to get through all that
it was 10:10 or 10:15 when they got the first morphine and valium into her
getting her from the wheelchair into the bed was... um.. dramatic
i mean, just shrieking aloud
so after like four doses of morphine weren't really cutting it, they switched to dilaudid
a physical therapist came in, and actually later in the evening she did manage to walk across the room, with a walker
which was a huge improvement over six hours previously, but still
in the end, she couldn't get functional enough to be taken home, and she's there now overnight
assuming she can manage tomorrow i will have to go get her tomorrow morning
i'm afraid that what they will send her home with will not be strong enough, and if something twinges she can't really support herself, she hasn't the strength, i mean, it's the back, which is the part that holds you up when other things cramp
she'd just fall
and there's no way i or my father could catch her, she weighs too much
so we're really in a pickle
getting on and off the toilet is going to be an adventure if she can manage it at all - there's nothing to push on with her arms, you see
and she can't possibly get into bed with the "roll in over the side" maneuver (sp?) because the rails don't come off, even if it weren't for all the furniture in the way
we might switch rooms for that, but both our beds are awfully low
so ya... i was there with her in the hospital for 13 hours
all this on no food and having gone to bed at about 2:45 AM last night
I'm actually not as tired or hungry as you might think
after about 1 I think my stomach gave up on the idea that i might feed it
and i got a "second wind" on wakefulness sometime in the evening
but i'm pretty drained emotionally
although not quite out of Give-A-Damn(tm)

Oh no! Love and hugs to you, and good wishes for your mom's recovery.

Ugh - blessings to you and your family. I've never had back pain remotely that bad, but I've had it bad enough to know that it is very difficult.

Yeesh, hope she feels better.

Blessings on your heads, and her back. May everything be well. Dealing with chronic pain of my own, and my mother's excruciating back pain when she was gravely ill, you all have my sympathy and empathy.

*hugs* Not a fun way to spend a day; hope you all can find some arrangement that'll work for everyone involved. Maybe the hospital staff would have some suggestions?

Ugh. That's awful. Have they checked for a ruptured disc or anyting like that? That sounds like a lot more is wrong than muscle spasms. My mom's got degenerative disc disease and my Dad had a slipped one once that required two of his vertabrae be fused.

I hope she feels better soon.

Ack! I hope she's ok by now (just read this). I know how the "all night in the hospital with mom" feels -- it happened to me a number of years ago. None of the shift nurses or doctors briefed the previous shift about what was going on, and they kept coming in and asking my poor mom the same questions over and over again. I was about ready to throttle the lot of them.

I realize they're horribly short-staffed, but after about the 5th round of the same damn questions to my mom (while she was in pain and couldn't even keep water down due to scar tissue from an old surgery in her large intestine), it got really old.

I refrained from making too much of an embarrassing ruckus about it, and eventually they got her a room and a simple surgery corrected the problem, but yeesh.

I meant "the next shift," not "the previous shift" (gah).
