Mom is home from the hospital and feeling okay. She can stand without support (although she's a little woobly, partly from medications), but isn't doing so for safety reasons; she's moving around everywhere with a walker at the moment just in case. The hardest thing is going to be getting used to all the ways she is not allowed to sit, stand, and move. Most of her usual habits (such as putting her legs up on something straight out in front of her when she sits, especially for hours at a time doing needlework, and bending straight over from the waist to do something on the floor, like pick up bits of dog kibble) are going to be right out. She also can't lean over to do anything, even lean on a countertop, and is not supposed to lift anything heavier than a few pounds. My dad and I are going to have to basically do everything for her, including feeding the dog (bending over to put the dish on the floor, you see). I don't know how long this regimen is supposed to last. Some of the changes I think are supposed to be lifelong, to prevent re-injury. I'm not sure I'm going to be able to convince her of that.
She's been prescribed quite a cocktail of drugs - besides the Percocet, there's also 600mg ibuprofen (presumably for its anti-inflammatory effect), Prilosec (we guess because that much ibuprofen, and taken 3 times a day at that, is going to be very hard on the stomach), and a muscle relaxant. I'm kind of surprised they didn't give her any thing specifically anti-spasmodic, since it was spasm that was causing the trouble in the first place, but maybe that doesn't mix well with narcotics or something, at least not in the home away from immediate care (at the hospital, as mentioned, they were giving her Valium and morphine at the same time, but that was under controlled conditions).
P.S. I now have it straight from the horse's mouth that Dilaudid is "the good shit."
