5.6! wowsers! didn't feel that big to me. I thought 4.0 at the most.

ETA: Apparently that was a lot more nerve-wracking for the folks at home, to wit, my parents (and the quite freaked-out dog). I was underground in a concrete-and-steel building at the time, for one thing, while they were above in a wood-frame house. Apparently it shook the place pretty good, but nothing got broken or anything.

Whee indeed. I like earthquakes, as long as nobody I know gets hurt. So far, all good. :)

In other news, I could have SWORN there was a post from you earlier about photos with orbs in them from an otherkin meet, but for the life of me I can't find it -- I wanted to pass it on to a friend who is into such things. Did something happen to it, or am I imagining things again?

That's a pretty big quake! Of course, look where you are, lol.

I live in Tennessee and we've had two earthquakes in the 4.0 range in the last ten years. The first one sounded like something exploded, and I could feel a wave travelling through the kitchen floor. The second one was centered in northern Alabama, and I was sleeping when it started. I woke up thinking I heard thunder, and then I heard the roof of my house shake as if wind was coming through it. The bed seemed to shake a little and then it was over. I sent in my comments to USGS about that one.

Usually when we have earthquakes, people always think it's a sonic boom, so they check with the airport first, lol, and they never know what's going on. :)

I'd call it medium-size. The last one I remember, 18 years ago, was 6.9 and though our house was fine, that was the one that collapsed a freeway deck and wreaked some other havoc. Medium-size ones are good because they tend to release tectonic tension (say that five times fast) that would otherwise build up into larger quakes. That said, that other quake I mentioned was apparently led up to by some medium-size ones. Heh. It's all a question of what you're used to -- I thought this one was kinda fun, actually.

Psssh. Yeah, 5.6 is nothing to us big kids that lived through Loma Prieta. (After that, I left the bay Area long enough to resettle in Seattle for the Nisqually quake. Aren't you all glad I'm back?)

Yeah, and the news was all treating it like it was something really major. I was vindicated, though, when someone emailed or called in or something and talked about holding up their fish tank, which is something my mother has said was "stupid" since I did it in '89.
