Sometimes it says that when it mysterious resets it's scratch disks to "startup" and then "none." :o

Seems to be connected to font problems for me, but I can't be 100% certain. I haven't kept a tally on whether these match up to times when PS 5.5 would simply quit-crash with no message at all. But, I mean, if it's "ewww that font data makes me puke", then why not say that specifically?

I had to downgrade to 6 from 7 because of stupid losing my stupid disc again.

Errr, just to be clear, the error I'm describing is from CS2. I'm just not sure if it matches in circmstances with errors I used to get from 5.5. (Altho I do still fire up 5.5 sometimes, for simple tasks like cropping, since it initializes about three times as fast.)
