The point of this is not the actual article (though, ugh) but the inserted text near the bottom - "Interested in more coverage of the California marijuana industry?" As far as I can tell, this kind of thing is inserted at random into articles in the Mercury News feed, because it's certainly not always related to the article contents. But what gets me is that it's so often either the Cannifornian thing, or an invitation to a Warriors newsletter or Flipboard. So, is it like... a "need pot or sports to deal with all this crap?" kind of thing?
