When I was 17, my mother could hear me coming in the house at any time of day or night, no matter how deeply asleep she might be at the time, and despite all my best efforts to be utterly silent.

Now she claims "oh, I didn't hear you come home" even if she's awake at the time, or if I come in rather un-silently while still slightly drunk from having been out clubbing.

Not that this is really a bad thing...

I think it may be because a parent is used to dealing with a kid and has all of his or her child-protecting mechanisms in place. Then the kid suddenly isn't strictly a kid anymore right around age 17. Once they get used to the new adult and realize it actually has a working survival instinct, then they can relax their vigil somewhat (ideally).
